The Grace Community Garden is dedicated to creating supportive environments for monarch butterflies during their migration north from Mexico, in addition to regional monarch populations. Monarch butterflies (along with other beneficial insects) are part of a healthy and thriving ecosystem. The garden contains three monarch butterfly habitats including a kid-inspired butterfly and hummingbird garden. During the winter/spring 2015 migration the Grace Community Garden had seven successful eggs hatches that produced healthy caterpillars that became healthy butterflies. Unfortunately, towards the end of the season four caterpillars succumbed to the protozoan parasite, OE. Measures are being taken to remove the infected milkweed in order to provide new growth and a safe environment for monarchs during the 2016 season.
Late February 2016 Monarch Butterfly Count:
8 caterpillars found. 7 chrysalis found: 1 non-viable, 3 successful adult butterfly emergings, 3 still developing. Deanne's milkweed in box #39 has several very young caterpillars (which we will be monitoring closely).
